For the longest time, my setup on Android involved the combo of WireGuard for VPN tunneling to my home-network and Tasker for automation. It worked—most of the time quite good. But it always felt like I was duct-taping two separate tools to get one cohesive experience. Recently, I discovered WGTunnel, and it has changed that feeling completely.
The Old Setup: WireGuard + Tasker
If you didn't read my previous posts about it, here's what I was using in the past:
- WireGuard handled my VPN connection. It's lightweight, secure, and fast—no complaints there.
- Tasker for automation. I used it to trigger the VPN connection based on the WiFi I'm connected to or my mobile network.
Sounds cool, right? It was—most of the time.
But somehow, especially when one app got updated I needed to manually start WireGuard or Tasker again to made them do what they should do. Android updates and changing battery optimization settings also was a thing which this setup didn't like much.
Now: WGTunnel
WGTunnel is a lightweight open source Android app that combines WireGuard tunneling and the auto-tunneling option, plus many other settings like split-tunneling (just specific apps using tunnel), all in one place.
Here’s what won me over:
Native WireGuard Support
WGTunnel just uses WireGuard under the hood, so you can just use your profile or scan the QR-Code like you did before.
Network Specific Automation
You can tell WGTunnel to automatically connect or disconnect based on the network you're on. Home Wi-Fi? No tunnel. Public coffee shop Wi-Fi? Tunnel on. Mobile network? Tunnel on.
One App, Less Hassle
No need to setup tasker and different profiles to control the wireguard app. No issues if one app stopped suddenly. Just one app with the right settings which are easy to understand and does everything you want by itself. Especially split-tunneling is something I will experiment with in the future for sure.
WGTunnel just simplifies the process and nails the use case for me.
